Programming CAN Gate

Postby JaronS » Tue Jun 12, 2012 2:14 pm

Hi

I am currently trialling a CAN Gate device to read and provide real time engine RPM data and also pass through GPS NMEA strings.
I can connect to the device however when I try and program the device I am getting no feedback from it.
It is currently NOT connected to a CAN Bus network.

Can you advise if I should get feedback from the device when programming?
Also is there a way I can pass through all the GPS strings using a memory slot?

Hi Jason,

Lets check a few things.
I have just been on the phone to Justin T and have your email.

1/ CANGate Communications
Are you directly connecting to the CANGate?
If you are the default settings are 57600 Baud, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and hardware flow control and check you have a null modem crossover cable.
The quickest way to get it all working is to open the CANGate and set the DIP switches 1 to 7 On (Do not turn switch 8 on) then power up the CANGAte.
Power the CANGate down and turn all DIP switches Off.

Then connect to the CANGate with a terminal program (e.g. DeTransfer)
Send the commands (In UPPERCASE)

VERBOSE ON
VERSION

And the unit should respond with the firmware version.
You can then set up the CAN connection e.g. CONNECT 2 500:A;SETADDRES 1 0 and the command SNOOPJ 2 should return J1939 messages.

2/ GPS.
ALL NMEA message strings? Why? Most of them have repeat data.

What items do you in which NMEA strings do you want to record?

Cheers

Hi Roger

I have since communicated to the device using a different USB to Serial cable and DeTransfer
I've spoken to our software developer and he has advised we need to receive the following GPS Strings:
GPRMC
GPRMF
GPGGA
GPGLL
GPGSV
GPGSA
GPVTG
I was more asking if there was a way to "passthrough" the strings rather then programming each memory slot

Thanks
Jaron

Good morning Jaron,

No you can't simply pass then strings through they must have a slot allocated for each item of data you wish to read.
You don't need to record all those strings as there is a lot of duplicated data just pick the data items you wish to read and select the strings that give you the most items for the least number of strings.

Cheers
